Supporting Mental Health Recovery through SMART Recovery Volunteer Work
As a dedicated volunteer with SMART Recovery, I devote approximately 8 hours weekly to supporting individuals on their journey to overcome addictive behaviors and achieve balanced lives. Working within this evidence-informed program, I receive specialized training in cognitive-behavioral approaches, motivational techniques, and crisis intervention strategies.
My role involves researching and presenting on critical topics such as addressing irrational beliefs, promoting self-acceptance, teaching mindfulness techniques, and developing healthy coping mechanisms for managing urges. Each week, I facilitate discussions with 50-60 participants, creating a stigma-free environment that emphasizes self-empowerment and compassionate support.
This experience has deepened my understanding of human nature and reinforced my commitment to mental health advocacy, allowing me to develop practical, supportive content for those navigating recovery pathways.
This is an example of one of my weekly presentations, focusing on mental health in the recovery journey.
DEI Advocacy That Protects Everyone in the Workplace
As someone who has dedicated my life to advocacy, I’ve always believed in the power of creating spaces where everyone feels valued and protected. From my early days as a mental health advocate to my nonprofit work, I’ve seen firsthand how inclusive policies transform lives.
My journey in mental health advocacy began long before it became a mainstream conversation. While managing content for a nonprofit focused on children’s mental health in our digital world, I researched and spoke about creating safe, supportive environments where everyone could thrive regardless of their background or challenges. This passion extended to my volunteer work with SMART Recovery, where I help participants overcome addictive behaviors in a stigma-free setting that emphasizes self-empowerment.
Today, as we discuss DEI policies, I’m reminded that true inclusion means protecting everyone—across religious backgrounds, ages, pregnancy status, veteran status, and disabilities. These protections aren’t just workplace policies; they’re extensions of the advocacy work I’ve championed throughout my career, ensuring all voices are heard and valued.
